Leading the group is redshirt junior Ty Simpson. A former five-star recruit, Simpson has patiently waited for his moment, appearing in games and showing flashes of brilliance. Despite never starting a full season, his performance in limited action earned him an impressive 83.2 grade from PFF on 188 dropbacks. His experience within the Alabama system and his upside make him the frontrunner in what is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing quarterback competitions in college football.
Backing up Simpson is former Washington Huskies quarterback Austin Mack. Though Mack has limited in-game experience, he arrives in Tuscaloosa with strong fundamentals and a reputation for leadership. Having trained under a pass-heavy system, Mack brings a valuable backup presence and remains a reliable option if called upon.
Perhaps the most exciting name in the quarterback room is true freshman Keelon Russell. Ranked as the No. 2 overall quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class, Russell is already turning heads with his combination of arm strength, mobility, and poise beyond his years. Though young, Russell could quickly rise through the depth chart if he adjusts well to the college game.
PFF’s decision to rank Alabama inside the top 10 reflects a bet on talent and long-term upside rather than proven production. While other top-ranked teams may feature returning stars, Alabama’s trio is considered one of the most gifted and well-balanced in the nation. There is a real sense that once the quarterback battle is decided, the Crimson Tide will once again boast one of the most dangerous signal-callers in the SEC.
Of course, questions remain. The absence of a clear starter adds a layer of uncertainty to Alabama’s 2025 campaign. However, this is not unfamiliar territory for the program. Alabama has often turned competition into motivation, allowing top players to emerge through intense battles in practice. Under new head coach Kalen DeBoer, known for developing elite quarterbacks, the expectation is that whoever earns the job will be ready to lead from day one.
This ranking is more than a number. It’s a reflection of how Alabama continues to reload, not rebuild. With a blend of experience, raw talent, and elite coaching, the quarterback position remains one of strength for the Crimson Tide. Whether it’s Simpson, Mack, or Russell who ultimately takes the reins, Alabama fans have every reason to feel confident that the future under center is in good hands.
